This buffer is used as a reaction buffer for enzymes with an activity in the basic pH range and in isotachophoresis of proteins.
It is a component in SDS-gradient gel electrophoresis system separating polypeptides in the molecular weight range of 1500 to 100,000.
The buffer pH is adjusted with NaOH or HCl taking care not to cross the desired pH and then backtracking since this may result in altering the salt concentration.
