Ampicillin HP

HP-Ampicillin eliminates the problem of satellite or background colonies, even after a prolonged incubation (2-4 days) or the plating of competent cells at 20 fold higher density. β-Lactamase secreted into the medium from ampicillin-resistant transformants rapidly inactivates regular ampicillin in the region surrounding the colonies. Thus plating cells at high density or incubating them for prolonged periods of time results in the appearance of ampicillin sensitive satellite colonies. This problem is ameliorated, but not completely eliminated, by using a high concentration of ampicillin, carbenicillin, or methicillin. HP-Ampicillin is a stronger inhibitor of B-Lactamase than regular ampicillin and, therefore, supports the growth of only ampicillin resistant colonies.
