Apoptosis protease activating factor-1 (Apaf-1) mediates the cytochrome c-dependent autocatalytic activation of pro-caspase-9 (Apaf-3) by forming oligomer upon binding with cytochrome c and dATP. Oligomeric Apaf-1 binds to pro-caspase 9 through their N-terminal CARD domains releasing mature caspase-9.
