Description:
Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is an osmoreceptor that forms a water-specific channel to regulate body water balance and to mediate water flow within the central nervous system. AQP4 is predominantly expressed in the ependymal cells lining the aqueductal system and over the space of the brain in contact with the subarachnoid space. As cerebrospinal fluid fills these structures, AQP4 facilitates water balance between brain parenchyma and fluid compartment.
