Caspase-activated deoxyribonuclease (CAD) also is designated as DNA fragmentation factor 40 kDa subunit (DFF40) and caspase-activated DNase. CAD is a nuclease that induces DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation during apoptosis. CAD degrades naked DNA and induces apoptotic morphology. CAD subunits of 45 and 40 kDa form heterodimers.
