Description:
CA15-3 (MUC-1) is a type I transmembrane protein expressed in the apical membrane of highly polarized epithelial cells. CA15-3 is also overexpressed in epithelial tumors, such as breast or ovarian cancer. CA15-3 is composed of alpha and beta subunits. The alpha subunit has cell adhesive properties, whereas the beta subunit modulates signaling in the SRK, ERK, and NF-kappa B pathways. CA15-3 is used as a serological clinical marker of breast cancer to monitor response to breast cancer treatment and disease recurrence.

Alternate Names: CA15-3, CA15.3, CA153, Carbohydrate antigen 15-3, Cancer antigen 15-3, Mucin-1, MUC-1, Polymorphic epithelial mucin, PEM, PEMT, Episialin, Tumor-associated mucin, Carcinoma-associated mucin, Carcinoma-associated mucin, Tumor-associated epithelial membrane antigen, EMA, H23AG, Peanut-reactive urinary mucin, PUM, Breast carcinoma-associated antigen DF3, CD227, MUC1, PUM, Krebs von den Lungen-6, KL-6
