Description:
Gap junction alpha-5 protein (connexin-40) mediates the flow of low molecular weight molecules across gap junctions. Defects in connexin-40 are a cause of familial atrial standstill (FAS). Atrial standstill is an extremely rare arrhythmia, characterized by the absence of electrical and mechanical activity in the atria.
