Approximately 1.000 cases of infection caused by enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) occur every year in Germany.
EHEC are highly contagious. Generally, 10 to 100 pathogens are enough to trigger an infection and possibly serious complications, such as haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS). Improved laboratory diagnostics are therefore indispensable for the early diagnosis of the disease, in order to allay the clinical course and to avoid outbreaks, especially in public facilities.
Microbiological detection of EHEC is difficult, since EHEC can not be phenotypically distinguished from apathogenic E. coli. The most important diagnostic criteria in EHEC laboratory diagnostics has to be the detection of shiga toxins. For the identification of shiga toxins the use of molecular methods is recommended.
