Protein Family: Cytokines

Pathway and Disease: Signaling Molecules and Interaction, Signal Transduction, Infectious Diseases, Immune System

Alternate Names: IL-1 beta, IL-1 beta, CatabolinDescription:
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) is produced by activated macrophages. This cytokine stimulates thymocyte proliferation by inducing IL-2 release, B-cell maturation and proliferation, and fibroblast growth factor activity. IL-1 beta proteins are involved in the inflammatory response, being identified as endogenous pyrogens, and are reported to stimulate the release of prostaglandin and collagenase from synovial cells. Recombinant IL-1 beta comprises a 153 amino acid fragment (117-269) corresponding to the mature IL-1 beta chain and is expressed in E. coli with an amino-terminal hexahistidine tag.
