Protein Family: Enzymes
Pathway and Disease: Amino Acid Metabolism
Alternate Names: MAOB, Amine oxidase [flavin-containing] B, Monoamine oxidase type B, MAOB, Mao Platelet, MAO BrainDescription:
Monoamine oxidase B (MAOB) is a flavin-containing mitochondrial enzyme which catalyzes the oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic monoamines. MAOB regulates the metabolic degradation of catecholamines and serotonin in neural and other target tissues. MAOB is found in platelets and in dopamine-secreting neurons in the brain. Increased levels of MAOB have been identified in brain of Alzheimer’s patients. Monoamine oxidases (MAOB and MAOA) are well-known targets for antidepressant drugs and for drugs used to treat neurological disorders and aging diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Recombinant MAOB comprises a 488 amino acid fragment (2-489) corresponding to the cytoplasmic domain fragment of the mature MAOB protein and is expressed in E. coli with an amino-terminal hexahistidine tag.
