The X inactive specific transcript (XIST) gene, located on chromosome Xq13.2, is involved in the X inactivation of early developmental process’ in women that transcriptionally silences one of the pair of X chromosomes and allows equilibration within men. XIST expression has been found to be dysregulated in a variety of cancers. Aberrant XIST gene expression can be present in breast cancer, ovarian cancer, testicular cancer, uterine sarcoma, and germ cell tumors.
